Kathmandu:  A Japanese Food Festival is being held in Kathmandu to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Nepal and Japan, aiming to connect the cultural relationship between the two countries through cuisine. Organized in collaboration with Hokkaido Group and Radisson Kathmandu, this festival showcases Japanese food traditions, culinary arts, and cultural practices to Nepali visitors.

The Hokkaido Asian Cuisine at Radisson Kathmandu in Lazimpat is hosting a festival from November 3 to 9, 2026, featuring various Japanese dishes along with live cooking demonstrations and cultural activities. The event runs from 5 PM to 8 PM and offers a Japanese dinner buffet with unlimited sushi. The buffet fee is set at 3,000 NPR per person, which includes one soft drink, applicable taxes, and service charges. The organizers mentioned that participation is limited to 70 people per day to ensure smooth management and a comfortable experience for visitors.

The main attraction of the festival is the live cooking demonstration by sushi artist Kazuyuki Hayashi from Japan. He showcases the style, skill, and traditions of Japanese cuisine by preparing sushi right in front of the visitors. The festival features various Japanese dishes, including nigiri sushi, hosomaki rolls, and teppanyaki. Around 48 dishes are presented in nine different styles, giving visitors a chance to understand the diversity of Japanese food and its preparation methods. The festival isn’t just about food; it also includes demonstrations of traditional Japanese calligraphy and the making of matcha tea. Japanese calligraphy combines writing with artistic expression, while matcha is an important part of Japanese tea culture.

This year, Hokkaido Group is also celebrating the seventh anniversary of its establishment. The group, which started its business journey in Nepal in 2019, has been expanding its restaurant business based on Japanese cuisine over the past seven years. The founder of the group, Arjun Adhikari, started the business with the idea of bringing the hospitality and culinary experience he gained in Japan to Nepal. Hokkaido Group’s business journey, which began with Park Village Resort, has now expanded to the Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara, and Chitwan. The group currently operates 10 restaurants and outlets.

This festival, organized to celebrate both the 70th anniversary of Nepal-Japan diplomatic relations and the 7th anniversary of its own establishment, also serves as a chance for cultural exchange alongside the Hokkaido group’s business trip. The event, held in collaboration with Radisson Kathmandu, brought together the taste of Japanese food, cooking skills, and cultural traditions in one place. It not only added more variety to the international dining scene in Kathmandu but also provided an opportunity to expand the recognition of Japanese cuisine in Nepal.
