NCE-Nepal picked in GCE board

Kathmandu : A Nepali education advocacy organization has been elected as the board of member in the Global Campaign for Education (GCE), a membership organization enhancing advocacy on quality education for one and all.

National Campaign for Education Nepal (NCE-Nepal) has been elected from the Asia Pacific region to the GCE board.

The World Assembly of GCE concluded here Sunday with the election of a 15-member new leadership chaired by Palestinian education activist Refat Sabbah.

On the occasion, educationist as well as Action Aid International’s Programme Director David Archer lauded the legal provisions relating to education in Nepal which is enshrined as the fundamental rights but relating to the education but expressed his concern over the nominal budget allocated for the education sector in the country

Archer opined that the government should launch community-based approaches to education and underscore prudent mobilization of resources and consider increase in investment in education which, he argued, would eventually contribute towards the economic prosperity of the country.

He viewed that allocation of adequate budget was a prerequisite to develop and promote inclusive and quality education to one and all as in the Goal No 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

According to the international practice, around 20 per cent of total budget or six per cent of the GDP is allocated for the development and promotion of education sector. However, only 9.77 per cent of the total budget has been allocated to this sector in Nepal this fiscal year.

Altogether 250 representatives from around 100 countries took part in the event were Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali and United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J Mohammed had addressed during the inaugural session.

The newly elected Chairperson Sabba, during the closing session today, argued that Nepal should follow the recommendations of the educationists who have been urging the government to increase tax in unproductive sector and increase investment in education.

NCE Nepal Secretary-General Dilli Ram Subedi echoed with Sabbah and demanded with the government to invest more in education sector in Nepal.

The World Assembly that kicked off since November 16 held deliberations on range of educational issues.
