Islamabad: The opposition has made preparations to remove Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan from the post. Opposition leaders have also asked the army not to interfere when a no-confidence motion is brought against Imran. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Bilawal Bhutto has claimed that the opposition has the support of 200 MPs, which is enough to oust Imran Khan and his government.
According to the Pakistani constitution, opposition parties need only 172 votes out of 342 seats to win a no-confidence vote. He says that we have taken this decision only after seeing the kind of situation in Pakistan. We have also talked to the army that this time it should stay within the constitutional framework and let the politicians do their work. We hope that the army will remain neutral. If this happens then no one can stop Imran’s government from falling. Bilawal said that the first or second week of March can be important for Pakistan.
On the other hand, the PPP co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari said, ‘All I can say is that it is a game of time. The no-confidence motion is more complicated than it looks. Zardari has been tasked with getting the numbers needed to win the no-confidence vote against the Imran government.
Opposition parties are not only hoping for support from their allies, but they claim that some MPs from the ruling Pakistan-e-Insaf (PTI) are also in touch with them and are waiting for a signal from the army before taking their decision. According to experts, there are a large number of leaders in PTI who have nothing to do with the ideology of any political party. They are known as political professionals who always choose the winning side. These people keep in touch with every party so that it can be found out which is the losing party.
An expert says that the time has come for these politicians to decide for the next election. They know that the wind is against PTI, but they want assurance of getting a ticket. On the other hand, the opposition claims that their first priority is to oust Imran Khan from power by winning the no-confidence motion. Then other important issues like who will be the prime minister, what will be the structure of the new government, how long will this government last, things like that will have to be dealt with.
According to sources, the opposition parties are making their plans in consultation with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is present in London. Nawaz is the largest part of the joint opposition, so it is believed that his brother Shahbaz Sharif will become the prime minister after the government is overthrown, while the PPP will get the speaker’s seat.
Imran can dissolve the house
On the other hand, Imran is trying to reconcile with the army. He is also trying to reach his friend turned enemy Chinese businessman Jehangir Khan. Khan’s ruling party claims control of over 30 MPs. Apart from this, Imran can also take a decision to dissolve the house. Experts say that this is the right time for the opposition to strike.-From Bhaskar
