Tel Aviv (Israel). The Israeli parliament will clear the way for new elections by passing a special bill on Wednesday night. All the parties have supported the conduct of new elections. Therefore, now the passage of this bill is also certain. This is the fifth election between 2019 and 2022. It has also been decided to give the responsibility of caretaker government to Yer Lapid, who was number two in the Naftali Bennett government. A few days ago it was believed that former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could become Prime Minister again by gathering support. However, later he also decided that it would be better to hold fresh elections.
According to a report in the Times of Israel, Bennett lost power because he did not know how to run a coalition like Netanyahu. Bennett’s government fell at a time when Iran threatened Israel with dire consequences. Yer Lapid, now a foreign minister in the Bennett government, would become acting prime minister, but he would not have the same powers as an elected prime minister. However, it will not make much difference, because Israel has a proper mechanism for the security and governance of the country.
According to Israeli media reports, elections can be held on October 25 or November 1 this year. It is believed that the party of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu can return to power. However, the chances of it getting a clear majority on its own are slim. Therefore, it is quite possible that Netanyahu may form the government under the Pre or Post-Pole Alliance. Bennett’s Alliance included right-wing parties as well as Liberals and Arab parties, and it seemed from the beginning that this alliance would be difficult to last.
Netanyahu had said in an interview recently – the Bennett government was the worst and weakest government in the history of Israel. I hope that whenever new elections are held, my party will get a clear majority and we will take our country forward rapidly.
By the way, the problems with Netanyahu are no less. The biggest reason for this is that there is a corruption case going on against him. However, he has denied all the allegations and the court has also admitted that the evidence presented against Netanyahu is not very credible.
There are 120 seats in the Parliament of Israel. 61 seats are needed for the majority. There is a multi-party system in the country and small parties also win some seats. For this reason, it is not easy for any one party to get a majority. Hence, there are often pre or post-poll alliances. Despite this, governments are not able to run, because the political situation is very difficult. There are differences of opinion between the parties on many issues.
