Without the support of small parties and independents, the ruling coalition will not be able to achieve a majority

Kathmandu. The importance of minor parties and independent parliamentarians has increased since the ruling coalition could not bring a comfortable majority for the formation of a new government. Three parties have emerged in this election. These include the National Independence Party, Civil Liberties Party, and Janmat Party. It is seen that Ravi Lamichhane’s Rashtriya Swatantra Party will directly win seven MPs and get at least 14 seats proportionally.

Nagarik Unmulan Party, which is patronized by Reshamlal Chaudhary, has won four seats with three MPs and one independent. But it is difficult to cut the 3 percent threshold. CK Raut-led Janmat Party is getting one MP directly and four and five MPs proportionally.

The Nepali Congress, Maoist Center, United Socialists, Losapa, and Rashtriya Janamorcha, which are in the ruling coalition, have not been able to get 138 seats to form the government. It is estimated that all five parties will win 136 seats directly and proportionally. Since 138 seats are needed to form the government, the importance of small parties and independent MPs has increased for a comfortable majority.

For this reason, the top leaders of the Nepali Congress, Maoists, and United Socialist Party have looked towards Janmaat Party, Nagarik Unmulan Party, and Independent MPs. With the aim of pulling them into the alliance, Maoist President Pushpa Kamal Dahal, United Samajwadi Party President Madhav Nepal, and Nepal Samajwadi Party President Dr. Baburam Bhattarai reached Dillibazar Jail and met Nagarik Unmulan Party leader Resham Chaudhary.

Dahal met on Monday and Nepal and Bhattarai met on Tuesday. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Maoist Chairman Dahal, and Home Minister Balkrishna Khan met with Janamat Party Chairman CK Raut on Thursday. Congress Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka has informed that public opinion has shown a desire to join the government. The alliance leader is also in touch with the Prabhu Shah group, which has two seats, and Amresh Kumar Singh, who won the election by fielding a rebel candidate against the Congress.

However, the ruling coalition has not yet proposed formal cooperation with the Jaspa and Rashtriya Swatantra Party. The Congress and Maoist leaders say that since the counting of votes is going on and if the candidates of the alliance win all the remaining three seats, only two MPs will be needed to form the government and that will be filled by Prabhu Shah or Janmat Party.
