Entering traditional politics into a new strategic course, the Nepali Congress parliamentary party is election

Kathmandu. Voting is being held today for the election of the Congress parliamentary party, which became the largest party in the House of Representatives from the election held last Magsir (November). Prime Minister and Chairman Sher Bahadur Deuba from the establishment side and Gagan Thapa from other groups are candidates.

Deuba has been the leader of the party and has become the prime minister five times. Thapa is contesting the election for the party leader for the first time. According to the election committee coordinator, polling will be held today from 8 am to 10 am at the office of the Congress parliamentary party, Singh Darbar. Being elected as the leader of the Congress party is the strongest contender for the future prime minister.

Leader of other groups Dr. Shekhar Koirala has taken the traditional politics of the Congress into a new and strategic course by supporting Thapa to become the party leader candidate. To be elected as the leader of the party, both Deuba and Thapa have adopted the strategy of securing the votes of their group and attracting the votes of the other group. With the finalization of the candidacy on Tuesday, both the leaders themselves and their groups are mobilizing to get votes in their favor.

Currently, the Congress parliamentary party has 89 MPs, so 45 votes are required for a majority. There is a provision in the constitution that the leader of the party will be elected only after receiving 50 percent of the votes. Arithmetically, the establishment side seems to have a comfortable majority. However, both parties are focused on the strategy of gaining the support of MPs in each other’s groups and increasing votes. Out of 89 voters, there are 54 MPs in the establishment and 35 in other groups.
