Prime Minister’s directive not to immediately implement the provision of registration in Nepal when bringing mobile phones from abroad

Kathmandu. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has instructed not to immediately implement the provision of registration in Nepal when bringing mobile phones from abroad. Prime Minister Dahal has instructed Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel not to implement the previous government’s decision regarding mobile phones that Nepali workers are allowed to bring when they return from abroad.

Prime Minister’s Press Coordinator Suryakiran Sharma informed that the Prime Minister has instructed not to tighten the new provisions and to continue with the old ongoing process. Nepalis working abroad are protesting that the government is going to charge up to 18 percent tax for bringing a mobile phone from abroad.

The Nepal Telecommunication Authority had set a deadline for implementing the Mobile Device Management System (MDMS) from today to control customs evasion mobiles. After the implementation of this system, if more than one mobile phone is brought as a gift while returning from abroad, a customs duty will be charged up to 18% and if a third mobile phone is brought, it will be confiscated by the customs department.

The Prime Minister has expressed his concern after the opposition started to discourage the illegal import, sale, distribution, and use of mobile sets. Nepal Telecommunication Authority is going to implement the MDMS system to discourage the illegal import, sale, distribution, and use of mobile sets to further organize them, and to track stolen and lost mobile sets.

According to the Customs Act, 2064, according to the Customs Act, 2064, the authority has requested that the mobile sets that are not registered in the mobile system brought by Nepalis coming from abroad for personal use and not registered in the system or not in use in Nepal before last August, be updated in the system by taking a notification letter from the customs office.

The authority says that mobile phones that have not been declared in customs will not be registered from today and the operation of such mobile sets will also be banned. It is mentioned in the notice that mobile sets brought for personal purposes will be registered only on the basis of a passport and citizenship or national identity card along with a notification letter.

While purchasing a mobile phone within Nepal, it can be ascertained that the mobile set is not registered with Nepal Telecom, and it is arranged that the mobile importer and seller must obtain the prior approval of the authority before importing the mobile phone.
