Most people think that TB occurs only in the lungs, but it is not so. TB can also occur in the intestines. Most cases of intestinal TB are caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In some cases, it is also caused by infection with Mycobacterium Bovis bacteria.
First of all, know when TB occurs in the intestines
This happens in two situations. First, by eating food infected with TB bacteria. Second, in the case of pulmonary TB, by swallowing the patient’s own mucus. Apart from AIDS and cancer patients, people who have less ability to fight diseases are more prone to intestinal TB.
There are three types of intestinal TB
This TB can occur in any part of the intestine, but in 75 percent of people, it occurs in the last part of the small intestine. When this happens, inflammation occurs in the intestine. If it is not treated in the early stages, it can prove to be fatal. There are three types of this disease-
- Ulcerative: In this, a condition of ulcer is formed in the intestines. It occurs in 60% of patients.
- Hypertrophic: In this type of TB, the intestinal wall becomes thick and hard. There is a blockage in the intestines. It occurs in 10% of patients.
- Ulcerative hypertrophic: In this condition, both ulcers and blockage occur in the intestines. This occurs in 30 percent of cases of intestinal TB patients.

Blood tests, chest, and abdominal X-ray, ultrasound, CT scan, Mento’s test are used to check for TB in the intestines. Apart from this, colonoscopy and biopsy also check for TB. In some patients, endoscopy is also needed. Dr. Sudhir says TB patients in the intestines are mostly troubled by diarrhea. In such a situation, most give ORS solutions to meet the lack of liquid and minerals in the body. After this, antimicrobial drugs are given to destroy the bacteria and eliminate the infection. Be such a diet: take more protein-rich things
Patients suffering from TB in the intestines should take more protein in the diet. For this, take more pulses in the diet. Apart from this, include soup, potato, rice, banana in the diet. Avoid taking milk or its preparations at the beginning of the treatment, they cause diarrhea. Apart from this, stay away from coffee, tea, cold drinks, they increase diarrhea and stomachache. Don’t drink alcohol.
