New York. An international coalition of more than 300 scientists from around the world wrote an open letter to META CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Monday. He demanded that he be given access to research being conducted by his company on how Facebook and Instagram are affecting the mental health of children and adolescents. The letter was written in response to internal documents leaked to ‘The Wall Street Journal’ by whistleblower Frances Haugen.
In fact, internal research from Meta found that one in three teenage girls who use Instagram feel bad about their bodies. However, the leaked research by Haugen does not conclusively prove that Meta’s platforms adversely affect the mental health of adolescents and children, the letter said. Nevertheless, the company should not hide its research as the issue is very serious. This cannot be said to be accurate based on the limited public information about META’s research techniques.
