Pakistan’s Abdul Rehman Makki was declared an international terrorist by UN Security Council

New Delhi. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Monday declared Pakistani terrorist Abdul Rehman Makki an international terrorist. The UNSC listed ISIL (Daesh) and Al-Qaeda as global terrorists under its Sanctions Committee. According to a statement issued by the UN, Abdul Rehman Makki’s assets across the world will now be frozen. Apart from this, travel to Makki will also be banned. That is, Makki can no longer use the money. Along with this, he cannot buy weapons and cannot travel outside the jurisdiction.

India and the US have already listed Abdul Makki as a terrorist under their domestic laws. He has been involved in raising funds, recruiting and radicalizing youths to violence, and planning attacks in India (particularly in Jammu and Kashmir).

Makki is the brother-in-law of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) chief and 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed. He has also held several leadership roles within the US-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) Lashkar. He has also played a role in raising funds for LeT operations. In June last year, China obstructed India’s bid to designate the Lashkar-e-Taiba (Da’esh) leader as a global terrorist, but this time China did not support it.

According to the US State Department, in 2020, a Pakistani anti-terrorism court convicted Abdul Rehman Makki in a terrorism financing case and sentenced him to prison. Prior to this, China has put obstacles in the list of terrorists, especially from Pakistan. China has repeatedly blocked Pakistan’s and the UN’s proposals to nominate Maulana Masood Azhar, chief of the banned terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
