There are a total of 12 new moons in a year in the Hindu calendar. But this year in January and December there will be 13 new moons due to being the month of Paush. In religious texts, it is called a festival. On this day there is a tradition of offering charity after the pilgrimage and then special worship of the ancestors. When the dates fluctuate. Then this festival sometimes lasts for two days. Therefore, when there is an Amavasya, Shradh-tarpan is performed for the ancestors on that day. At the same time, when it is at sunrise, bathing and charity are done.
This year, the combination of Somvati Amavasya is happening once and Shanishchari Amavasya is being formed twice. The pilgrimage bath and charity done in this special combination gives inexhaustible results. These yogas are formed when Amavasya happens on Monday and Saturday.
According to astrology that Amavasya falling in a gentle war is auspicious. At the same time, with cruel blows, it gives inauspicious results. It has been told in astrological texts that if there is an Amavasya on Monday, Mars, Venus, and Thursday, then it gives auspicious results. At the same time, Amavasya on Mercury, Saturn, and Sunday give inauspicious results.
Amavasya and the relation of ancestors
The name of the most special among the thousands of rays of the sun is Ama. The sun illuminates the earth by the brilliance of that ray named Ama. When the moon is to reside in that ama ray, that is, due to the presence of the moon, there is a new moon. Then through that ray, the ancestors from the upper part of the moon come to the earth. That is why the new moon day of Shradh Paksha is important.
Do’s and Don’ts on Amavasya
- It is a tradition to wake up early in the morning on Amavasya and take a holy bath. If this is not possible, then you can take bath with Gangajal at home. After this, take a resolution and worship God and donate food items and clothes to the needy people.
- Amavasya Tithi is ruled by Pitrudev and this day is dedicated to ancestors. That is why this festival is also called the day of ancestors. Shradh-tarpan should also be done on this day for the satisfaction of ancestors. By providing food to needy people on Amavasya, directly reaches the ancestors. If this is done then one gets freedom from Pitra Dosh.
- At this festival, feed and donate food to any needy or destitute people. By doing this one gets freedom from Pitra Dosh. Amavasya day is considered very auspicious. Do not consume meat, liquor, and intoxicants on this day. Doing so causes paternalism.
