According to the United Nations report, new estimates show that by 2030, the world’s population will reach about 8.5 billion. The United Nations has predicted that the world’s population will reach 9.7 billion by 2050 and 10.4 billion by 2100. According to the report, it is also estimated that India will surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that this year, on the occasion of World Population Day, the number will exceed 8 billion. It is a time to celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity and talk about progress in health and be happy. He added that it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitment to each other.

UNFPA India and Bhutan Director Andrea Wojnar said reproductive and health rights of women and girls are paramount amid demographic changes. He emphasized that problems such as climate change and access to health have affected women and girls who are the most vulnerable.

Meanwhile, there is talk that this is the first time since 1950 that the rate of population growth has slowed down. This topic is being watched with interest. According to the United Nations population estimates released in 2022, there has been a rapid decline in fertility in many countries over the past few decades.

Two-thirds of the world’s population lives in areas where the female fertility rate is less than 2.1 percent. Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the average life expectancy has decreased by one year in 2021. Last year it was 71 years. Even in terms of average life expectancy, there is inequality in different regions of the world.
