Kathmandu. It has been almost two years since the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) infection. The coronavirus infection, which started in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, is now seen all over the world. New variants of the Corona have appeared around the world. Which has proved to be very deadly for human health. Alpha, beta, gamma, and delta variants are considered the most deadly in the World Health Organization (WHO) variants of interest. Of these, delta and alpha variants have been found to be infected in Nepal, while beta and gamma variants are more likely to enter.
Corona was first reported in a livestock market near Wuhan, China. The virus spread around the world in just a few months. Outbreaks appear to be exacerbated during this time. The scientific name of the virus is SARS-COVE-2. The disease caused by its infection is called covid-19. The name of the virus is a combination of the three words Carona, virus, and disease in the year 2019.
Scientists have named a group of viruses that have RNA in their genetic makeup as coronaviruses, which have a crown-like appearance. Coronavirus is an easily understood name even though it is called ‘crown virus’ or ‘crown virus’ in Nepali. Hundreds of different variants of the virus have now appeared around the world. Of these, alpha, beta, gamma, and delta variants are considered the most deadly. The WHO considers these four variants to be deadly. These variants are spreading rapidly around the world.
WHO variants of interest include Eta (B1.525), Lota (B1.526), Kappa (B1.617.1), Zeta (P2), Theta (P3). The countries of origin are Peru, Colombia, the Philippines, India, and the USA. Similarly, the WHO has warned of variants including B1.427, B1.429, R1, C36.3, and C1.2. Its countries of origin are South Africa, Indonesia, Russia, and Egypt.
The B1.617.2 type of coronavirus that has spread in India has been given the name of the Indian variant by the media and people to make it easier to pronounce the name. After some time, India objected to the name and it was identified as a delta variant. The WHO recommends the use of non-scientific groups such as alpha, beta, and gamma, or letters that are easier and more practical to pronounce and discuss, to name variants.
Dangerous variants (B.1.1.7) found in the UK have been named Alpha, variants found in South Africa have been named Beta, and variants found in Brazil have been named Gamma. The name is given.
Beta and Gamma can come to Nepal
Among the variants of concern found in Nepal are Delta and Alpha. According to Dr. Sher Bahadur Pun, coordinator of Teku Hospital, Delta is considered to be the most contagious of the two variants found in Nepal. “Of these, only alpha variants can be identified in Nepal,” Pun said.
These variants have been found to spread faster than before and cause more infections in children and youth. According to doctors, the symptoms include fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and respiratory and heart problems. Variants are evolving naturally as mutants. The geography and environment of the country can also affect the nature of the variant somewhere. After the origin of the variant, it will bring a kind of wave, and at that time the variant will be deadly, says the coordinator Pun.
As it is important to identify the variants of the virus, it is necessary to take information about the mutations of the virus and make a disease control policy and response. With each passing month, the virus becomes more likely to spread to other communities. In the current situation, the genetic material of 10/15 virus samples should be sequenced so that each age group is represented every month. However, only alpha variants can be identified in Nepal.
