Minimally invasive surgery revolutionizes the modality of treatment of heart diseases: Dr. Singh

Dr. Balbir Singh is currently in Kathmandu. While he was in Kathmandu, Keshab Aryal’s conversation focused on the new technologies and knowledge that have been developed recently in cardiac science and the services provided by Maxma Hospital.

Dr. Balbir Singh, you are in Kathmandu at this time. What is your special purpose in coming to Kathmandu?

The main purpose of my coming to Nepal is to share my knowledge with the cardiologists of Nepal. Even in Nepal, there are cardiologists with special abilities. Learning the knowledge they have and I have learned something new while working at Max Hospital for the last three years. That fence with them. We have introduced some new knowledge and techniques in Max. On that occasion, I will share my experience in Nepal.

What is the new knowledge and technique brought to practice in Max?

Recently, new techniques and knowledge have been developed rapidly in cardiac science. These new technologies and knowledge can provide important support in the treatment of heart disease patients. It can give them a new life. With the advent of minimally invasive surgery, open-heart surgery is no longer the only option for patients. These new and scientific methods have not only revolutionized the treatment methods and results, but they can also significantly improve the condition of patients even in very complex conditions. As for the question of what is in Max, we have new techniques that are not even available in America, from minimally invasive treatment to non-invasive treatment.

You said the knowledge and method of treatment without (operation can you explain more about it?

Recent advances in interventional cardiology have greatly improved treatment outcomes. Making life possible with fast and appropriate medical care. “One such recent advancement is cardiac cryoablation, which is very effective in heart rhythm disorders.

As a minimally invasive procedure, surgeons use a thin flexible tube (balloon catheter) to locate and freeze (in a controlled manner at temperatures as low as minus 80 degrees) the heart tissue that triggers the irregular heartbeat, restoring a normal heart rhythm. Being a completely safe procedure, there is zero chance of affecting healthy tissue and surrounding structures and various studies have found this procedure to be more effective than drugs.

Valvular heart complications are another risk complication, valve replacement remains the last resort. However, with recent advances, Mitra Clip catheter-based procedures can help repair leaky heart valves without surgery. In such cases, if not treated, the heart becomes enlarged, it becomes difficult to breathe and even heart problems can occur. Until now, open heart surgery with valve repair or replacement was the only possible treatment for such patients in India, but this is often high risk and may not be beneficial. Similarly, the Mitral is a new catheter based on the non-surgical repair of the mitral valve inside the heart. This is done in a cath lab similar to angioplasty, where special catheters are inserted through a large vein in the groin and the catheter is passed from the right chamber of the heart to the left chamber of the heart, known as the interatrial septum. Then, under echocardiography and X-ray guidance, a clip is placed on the mitral valve to reduce the leak, which improves the patient’s condition. Patients are usually ready to be discharged in 24 to 48 hours. Other innovations in interventional cardiology include transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) and mitral valve procedures.

TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure to replace a damaged aortic valve with a new artificial valve. This procedure is usually recommended for patients who are at high risk for traditional open-heart surgery because of their age, medical history, or other health conditions. Similarly, Mitral Valve MViV is a minimally invasive surgical technique used to treat a leaking or failing mitral valve without the need for open heart surgery. It involves inserting a new valve inside the malfunctioning mitral valve to improve its function and restore normal blood flow. The MViV procedure is performed using a catheter-based approach and can often be performed under conscious sedation, rather than general anesthesia. This technique is particularly useful for patients who are at high risk for open-heart surgery or who have already undergone one or more surgical interventions in the past. “Advances in interventional cardiology have revolutionized the treatment of heart disease and provided patients with new and improved treatment options to help them live longer and healthier lives.

What advice should you give to prevent heart disease?

Various cardiovascular diseases appear to be responsible for at least 50 percent of overall comorbidities (first serious diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer) and premature deaths annually. Recently, heart problems are also seen in the age group of 25 to 40 years. This is not normal. Similarly, one out of every four deaths seems to be due to ignorance of mild symptoms. Heart disease is also estimated to be one of the leading causes of death for men and women between the ages of 25 and 40. Therefore, Bachchan should pay attention to the diet in Bihar to avoid getting health check-ups from time to time.
