Kathmandu, April 23 : The government is to put coordination and monitoring mechanism in place for facilitating in the effective construction of the Kathmandu Tarai/Madhes Fast-track. The Kathmandu Tarai/Mashesh Fasttrack project is a much-awaited project of national pride. Defence Minister Ishwar Pokharel said that a proposal to this effect would be forwarded to the Council of Ministers for its decision on the issue, pointing out that such a mechanism should have been constituted before to facilitate the Nepal Army in the construction of the project. He said the project is linked to the priority and prosperity of the country.
Minister Pokharel said this while addressing the quarterly meeting of the Ministry-level Development Problem Resolution Committee today. “The work carried out by the Nepalese Army in the construction of the fasttrack is so far satisfactory. The Ministry of Defence is preparing to take a proposal for the formation of the Coordination and Monitoring Mechanism on the project as not doing so would be as non-cooperation to the Army,” he said.
The Defence Minister had carried out an on-site observation of the fast-track project on March 22 and taken stock of its work progress.
The fast-track starts from Khokana of Lalitpur and ends at Nijgadh of Bara district. It is a 76.2 kilometres long expressway which would be of Asian standard. A meeting of the concerned bodies was held at the Army Headquarters on April 11 to discuss on addressing issues that were observed during the on-site observation.
Construction of the fast-track is expected to contribute to the economic and social development as it will be about an hour’s travel from Kathmandu to Nijgadh.
Minister Pokharel on the occasion opined that works of infrastructure development could move ahead smoothly if there is clarity of policy, a reliable structure, strong legal basis, pragmatic planning and regular and effective monitoring. He also directed the leadership at every level to work with integrity and deliver effective services to the people and the country.
The government had entrusted the Nepal Army with the responsibility of construction of the Kathmandu Tarai/Madhes Fast-track Project through a meeting of the Council of Ministers on May 4, 2017. The then Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ had laid the foundation stone of this project in Nijgadh. The Nepal Army had opened the track of the fast-track in 2069 BS, six years back. The government has set aside Rs 10 billion for the construction of the project in the current fiscal year’s budget. Defence Secretary Bishnu Prasad Lamsal said that the Ministry and the Nepal Army needed to further work hard to contribute to the government’s goal of attaining development and prosperity for the country.
