Kathmandu. Outgoing Rashtriya Prajatantra Party Chairman Kamal Thapa on Tuesday announced his separation from RPP. Speaking at a press conference in his hometown Hatauda on Tuesday, Thapa announced that he has parted ways with the RPP, which carries the political agenda of constitutional monarchy and Hindu Rashtra.
Recalling his 31-year-long relationship with the party, Thapa announced on Tuesday that he had severed ties with the party and officially split from RPP. He recalled the moments he spent in RPP and said that he would always be proud of those moments. Stating that he would move forward in consultation with the elders for a new political destination, Thapa also urged all party workers to support and assist in the new journey.
Analyzing that the journey has been difficult and challenging for some time, the party has requested the bereaved comrades and cadres in such a situation to unite in the new journey with the confidence to reach their destination as soon as possible.
Similarly, Thapa urged the comrades who are committed to the new ideology to line up for the new ideology by correcting the mistakes and shortcomings of the past in the current journey. Stating that there is not much time to think now as the local level election is approaching, Thapa requested for a quick decision.
Allegations against the former monarchy
Thapa, who has been focusing on politics in the name of the monarchy since the Panchayat period, has recently started making serious allegations against the same institution. After defeating Thapa at the RPP’s unity convention held in Kathmandu on December 3 and 4, Thapa has been publicly accusing the former king of interfering in the party. Thapa has been accusing the then King Gyanendra of doing injustice to him after he lost to Rajendra Lingden as the party’s central chairman.
Thapa, who has been dissatisfied with the former king’s defeat in the party’s internal politics at the Ekta General Convention, warned that he would look for alternatives if his demands were not investigated. Thapa had twice written a letter to the chairperson in November and January to investigate the matter, the first time on 27 Margsir and the second time on 16 Magh.
Stating that Nirmal Niwas had played an important role in defeating him during the Ekta General Convention, Thapa said that Maharaj Dhiraj’s wish was to defeat Thapa this time.
Thapa has alleged that Nirmal Niwas got more than 400 votes in the General Convention to defeat him in a planned manner. Thapa has argued that the thinking has changed as he has been portraying Nirmal Niwas as an institution that has risen above the election.
He said that interference in the party of Nirmal Niwas was not a common thing and since Nirmal Niwas was not a house for only one citizen, it should not be done. Stating that it was extraordinary for Nirmal Niwas to be actively involved in the convention, he said that the king he had envisioned was not like that.
How can one believe that if the monarchy is restored tomorrow, there will be no interference in any party? Questioning how the issue of restoration of the monarchy was raised in the election, Homine Thapa said. He accused the party of trying to turn the party into a people’s party by weakening the entire RPP and not only to defeat the party personally.
Nirmal Niwas said that he wanted to run away from the remote control of RPP Niwas. Recalling that King Birendra and Gyanendra had not interfered in the internal affairs of the party in its 31-year history, Nirmal Niwas said that it has repeatedly played an intervening role since 1973 BS. Similarly, Thapa accused the party of splitting within six months of its unification in 2073 BS and claimed that the party was trying to form a bhajan mandali committee to restore the monarchy rather than politics.
False Cultivation in Politics RPP and Pashupati Shamsher Rana and Dr. Speaking at the RPP-United Unity Declaration Meeting led by Prakash Chandra Lohani, the then Chairman Thapa had claimed that RPP would never split.
Thapa even took an oath not to split the party by holding in his hand the Gita, the holiest book of Hindus. He had sworn that the party would never split as long as he was in the leadership. However, Thapa’s oath did not last for two years.
Thapa, who has repeatedly been a minister in the name of the monarchy, has been showing political dissatisfaction since he lost the general election to Hetauda and was barred from participating in the government. Thapa, who is dying to become a minister, has been participating in the government of all the political parties who agree or disagree with the party’s principles and ideas to fulfill his self-interest. Even the local voters of Makwanpur did not like Thapa’s tendency.
Thapa, who had always been an advocate of the monarchy and succeeded in assassinating ministers in the name of the monarchy, was very close to Gyanendra Shah at that time. He was under a lot of stress after losing the post of party president from the party’s unity convention and not being able to join the government. After the RPP’s political legacy shrunk from the General Convention to the next generation, it seems that Thapa’s alliance with CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli is growing.
There is talk in the political circles that Thapa is not leaning towards UML due to the growing rift with Oli. Similarly, Safal Thapa, who became the Home Minister in the then Gyanendra Shah-led government during the Second People’s Movement, had even ordered firing at various places to quell the people’s movement.
