Children thinking themselves sick after watching videos: Seeking treatment on social media, finding it difficult to get out of the clutches of influencers

Washington. These days there is a flood of people giving information about mental illnesses and their symptoms on social media. The so-called experts are talking about this on different platforms, but this process is becoming a big problem for teenagers. They have started thinking of themselves as sick after seeing the reels and videos of social media. Seeing the videos of social media influencers, they are looking for such traits in themselves. After diagnosing the disease online, for its treatment too, videos and reels of these social media platforms are being watched and heard.

In fact, these teenagers are often not just sick, says American psychiatrist Annie Bark, just consider themselves sick based on the symptoms described in the video. They are in such a grip on social media that they themselves tell the name of their disease. The problem becomes even bigger when they rely on so-called social media experts for treatment rather than the advice of psychiatrists. Teenagers also try the methods mentioned in these videos with full confidence.

Many times, despite having similar symptoms, one person may have a mental illness, while another may not, says Barks. It also depends on age, as a teenager with similar symptoms may be mentally fit, while an elderly person may be mentally ill. It seems, she says, that more than treating her patients, it is more difficult to get them out of the clutches of social media influencers.

According to Mick Princeton, chief scientist of the American Psychological Association, people do not want people to know about their mental illness due to a lack of awareness. That’s why people especially teenagers try to find out about their disease through social media based on their symptoms. Many quizzes can also be easily found online.

Actually, the algorithm of social media platforms like Tiktok Facebook, and Instagram is such that whatever you search, the same type of content keeps coming. Anish Dubey, president of the American Psychiatric Association, says that if the child is talking about a video seen on social media, listen to it. See this as an opportunity to build a healthy relationship with the child, so that he or she can explain everything.

treat stress as a mental illness

Doctor Princeton says, children misunderstand the stress caused by some immediate problem as a mental illness. The reason for searching it online is also that even at home no elder has time to listen to them. A study conducted in March found that 100 videos on the hashtag Mental Health on the social media platform had more than 100 million views.
