Kathmandu. There are indications that the Nepal National Independent Party will almost withdraw its support to Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s government on Sunday. Because of this, it is expected that political upheaval will start again in Nepal. Some coalition ministers have resigned. This has put the government in crisis. In the meeting held by NERASWAPA on Sunday, party president Ravi Lamichhane announced the resignation of the ministers.
In the elections held in Nepal, Ravi Lamichhane’s National Independent Party became the fourth-largest party with 20 seats. With his support, Pushpa Kamal Dahal and KP Oli formed the government together. However, the Supreme Court convicted Ravi Lamichhane in the dual citizenship case. He was then dismissed from the post of Deputy Prime Minister. It is said that this is the reason why he has decided to leave the government.
The Supreme Court has found Nepal’s Deputy Prime Minister Ravi Lamichhane guilty of dual citizenship. The court ordered the cancellation of his membership and the election of MPs. After that, he had to leave the post of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. Lamichhane was accused of having US citizenship in addition to Nepal.
Dual citizenship is considered illegal in Nepal. Lamichhane was accused of renouncing his American citizenship and taking a Nepali passport. Earlier, Ravi Lamichhane, who is a Nepali citizen, had obtained a US green card. He had returned to Nepal only as an American citizen and had obtained a Nepali passport on the basis of his canceled Nepali citizenship. In Nepal, there is a rule to apply to the district administration to get Nepalese citizenship again.
After the election in November last year, Chinese senior official Wang Jin met with Nepal’s second-largest party CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, and Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Only two hours after this meeting, a new government was formed in Nepal and Pushpa Kamal Dahal became the prime minister.
