Lions Club Chabahil City’s campaign successfully climbs Yalung Ri peak

Kathmandu: The Lions Club of Kathmandu Chabahil City has announced the successful ascent of the 5,630-meter-high Yalung Ri Himal in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality of Dolakha. The club informed through a press conference organized on Wednesday that an 11-member team successfully reached the peak at 11:30 am on April 24, 2026.

According to the club, the climb, which was carried out in line with the motto “We serve, at any height,” was dedicated to Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions International. On the occasion, the club said that a proposal was also put forward to name Yalung Ri Himal “Melvin Jones Peak.” It is believed that this will enhance the international recognition of the Gaurishankar region and help promote sustainable and adventure tourism.

Lions International was founded on June 7, 1917, and is an organization active in humanitarian service with 1.4 million members worldwide. In Nepal, the first Lions Club was established in Biratnagar on August 9, 1971. Currently, more than 46,000 members across Nepal are active in areas such as vision treatment, education, diabetes awareness, hunger reduction, environmental conservation, youth development, childhood cancer support, and disaster management.

The climb was organized on the occasion of Lions International Environment Week. The club stated that one of the two main objectives of the campaign was to clean the trekking route and collect garbage as part of environmental protection. In addition, the aim was to promote the tourism potential of the Gaurishankar region at the international level.

The expedition team was led by District Environment Chief and former President of Nepal Mountaineering Association Jimba Jangbu Sherpa. Dawa Chhiri Sherpa and Purba Sherpa of the team successfully reached the peak.

The team included Kalpana Maharjan (world record holder and goodwill ambassador), 74-year-old Kanchhi Phuti Sherpa, and Nima Gaye Sherpa, ward chairperson of Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-9, among others.
